Why Traditional Metal Braces Are Still a Good Choice

In a world where orthodontic options like ceramic braces and Invisalign exist, why do dental patients still choose traditional metal braces? Many prefer the invisible and inconspicuous appearance of clear aligners to the bright, garish appearance of metal brackets wired across your teeth. Invisible braces seem to offer the same benefits as traditional braces, while looking cleaner and more desirable. However, there are reasons why traditional braces are still used today with satisfactory results.

In order to keep its transparent appearance, Invisalign is molded into a specific shape that can fit on a patient’s teeth like a sports mouthguard. The molds that orthodontists use to make these unique shapes are not capable of fixing certain types of tooth misalignment, such as rotated teeth and large gaps. Therefore, not every patient with dental misalignment issues is a good candidate for Invisalign treatment.

It is significantly easier to tighten and adjust traditional braces whenever necessary, even in severe, challenging cases. Traditional braces can even align teeth at different heights and are the most comprehensive, versatile treatment for orthodontic issues. Furthermore, traditional braces may be better for your needs in regards to discipline and finances.

Invisalign braces can be more comfortable since you can remove them at will, but if you don’t have the discipline to wear them for at least 22 hours a day, you won’t see the results you desire. You can’t remove traditional braces without an orthodontist’s help, so they can be a more effective treatment for younger patients and people who can’t resist removing their Invisalign braces due to discomfort. Also, many traditional braces are less expensive than Invisalign treatment and won’t require you to refill your Invisalign trays or do extra cleaning such as rinsing and soaking your aligners.

If you’re wondering whether traditional braces or Invisalign is right for you, Dr. Mark Rashidi and his team at Remarkable Smiles can help you find the perfect treatment for you.
