An introduction to Bruxism and Invisalign

Invisalign and Bruxism

If you’ve considered braces over the past several years, chances are you’ve been introduced to Invisalign – an alternative to braces that uses clear plastic aligners to straighten teeth. These aligners are nearly invisible to the naked eye, can be removed to eat and drink, and are considered more comfortable in the mouth than traditional metal braces.

However, Invisalign is not right for everyone, and for those that struggle with severe teeth clenching and grinding, it may be a good idea to consider an alternative treatment for straighter teeth.

P

Why Avoid Invisalign?

One of Invisalign’s greatest strengths can also present problems when a person has bruxism – but only SEVERE bruxism. Invisalign is made with comfortable, clear thin plastic aligners. Although strong, these aligners can be damaged under pressure, which is why they need to be taken out any time you plan to eat or snack.

If you struggle with severe bruxism, however, you may be clenching and grinding your teeth at night in a way that can damage the plastic aligners quickly. Since you’re also asleep, you may be damaging them without realizing it. Invisalign also cannot be used with splints or mouth guards, which means that you won’t be able to protect your teeth from grinding. This could put you at risk for re-developing TMJ.

However, this applies to only the most severe bruxism cases. If you’re not sure, we’re happy to guide you through the process and see if Invisalign is right for you.

Alternatives to Invisalign in Tooth Grinders

If you’re someone that grinds your teeth or clenches at night, Invisalign may or may not be the right dental treatment for you. The good news, however, is that there are many other options for those that need straighter teeth but don’t want traditional metal braces, including:

  • Ceramic Braces
  • Lingual Braces (behind the teeth braces)
  • Self-Ligating Braces

Although Invisalign is easily one of our most popular treatments here at Remarkable Smiles, there are other types of braces available that can help you straighten your teeth in a more esthetic way.

If you struggle with bruxism, or you were looking for braces, please feel free and call me today at 949-770-8011, or fill out our form and we’ll be happy to provide you with a consultation to determine if Invisalign, or an alternative, is best for your specific tooth straightening needs.
