Which braces are best for your teeth?
Are you new to the world of orthodontics? If this is your first time getting braces for straightening your teeth, you may be surprised to learn that there are different types of braces made from different materials. Before you get your braces, it’s important to do research and understand which type of brace best fits your preferences. Here are a few of the most common types of dental braces.
Metal Braces
Metal braces are known as the most traditional or conventional options. These braces have been used for centuries and consist of metal brackets attached to the teeth that are linked together by a wire that aligns the teeth by applying pressure to them. This method is the quickest and most effective, but many people find the braces’ distinctive appearance not as esthetic as some of the other options available.
Ceramic Braces
Ceramic braces are very similar to metal braces and use the same general treatment method. Brackets are applied to the teeth and connected by a wire that exerts pressure. The difference is that the brackets are made from a clear ceramic material instead of metal. These braces are much less noticeable but will cost more than traditional metal braces.
Lingual Braces
With this system, the brackets are placed behind the teeth. This is the true invisible way of straightening teeth. Also, this option costs more than all the other options.
Invisalign/Clear Aligners
Clear aligners are probably the treatment method that is most different from traditional metal braces. This method uses see-through aligner trays that are applied to your teeth like a mouthguard. Since they use no wires and are removable, they are the most comfortable treatment option, and since they are completely transparent, they are the second most aesthetically-pleasing type of dental brace, after lingual braces. However, clear aligners may not work on certain types of misaligned teeth.
Be sure to discuss treatment options with your dentist or orthodontist before choosing one. The right dental braces could be your pathway to a bright, perfect new smile.
